The company was founded when Dietmar Hopp left IBM with a few other employees in the early 1970's to create SAP, which stands for Systems, Applications, Products. The earliest success was developing an accounting and payroll system which replaced a punchcard system.
Hopp is now worth an estimated $15.2 billion and is the backer of the German soccer team TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
